Time for play
Emma Griffin profiles a selection of products for playgrounds
Kitcamp This modular play system is made up of interlocking panels, suitable for imaginative indoor or outdoor play. The panels are robust, yet lightweight enough for children to manipulate and create their own play spaces. There’s scope for encouraging role play by building a spaceship, submarine or hospital. It’s also possible to create activity tables, painting and mark-making stations or to build a set for a celebration assembly. Panels are made from expanded polypropylene (EPP), a highly durable and weather-resistant material, and are safety tested for stability, fl ammability and toxicity. Supported by a team of teachers who actively contribute to creating curriculum-based learning through play, Kitcamp offers resources and toolkits to download (including real-life examples of how the system can improve and transform learning environments for children).

Learning Playtime takes up a substantial amount of the primary school day and OPAL has helped more than 1,000 British schools make playtimes more enjoyable for children. Its Primary Programme helps schools develop the quality of their play, addressing policy, strategy, planning, staffi ng, health and safety, resourcing, community participation and environment. By focusing on improvements that can be sustained in the long term, schools that invested in the OPAL programme often see an 80 per cent drop in reported behaviour issues and fi rst aid incidents.
