This autumn, we’ve profiled grants for capital funding, whether that’s for new buildings, specialist labs and facilities or outdoor spaces. As always, grants are subject to review, so do check on the FundEd grants database.
FUNDER
Wolfson Foundation

DETAILS
The Wolfson Foundation has funding available for high-achieving secondary schools and sixth form colleges. Grants can be for equipment or building projects and must help improve the teaching of science, computer science, design and technology, art, languages, music or performing arts at GCSE and A-level. If your total project cost is more than £50,000 it is expected that you will provide an element of match funding. Visit

Schools or PTAs with charitable status can apply for up to ten per cent of capital works project costs from the Garfield Weston Foundation. Such grants are classed as local community projects and tend not to exceed £30,000. It is preferred that you have raised half the project cost before you apply. Visit

Educational establishments in Scotland providing access for clubs or community use can apply for a grant to create, improve or increase the capacity of sporting facilities. Up to 50% of the total project cost can be applied for. Projects could include the upgrade or creation of sports pitches or sports halls, installation of floodlights, provision of a swimming pool, climbing wall or multi-use games area. Visit

IKEA X Let’s Go Zero
Up to £2,000-worth of IKEA products, expertise and/ or solutions
National Lottery Community Fund
£300 to £10,000
Due to reopen for applications in early 2024
Schools, colleges and nurseries in the UK can apply for products and input from IKEA to help realise sustainability projects that will help to achieve net zero by 2030. Students aged 18 or under must be involved in the planning of the initiatives, which could include improving or creating a school allotment, setting up an eco-hub or building an outdoor learning area. Ongoing, but allow 12 weeks for a decision
Schools in each of the UK’s four countries can apply to the Awards for All fund for their nation, for a grant to improve places and spaces and strengthen the local community. Providing some form of community benefit is essential. From 15 November, the maximum grant is due to increase to £20,000 for up to two years from the current limit of £10,000. Visit

Steel Charitable Trust
£10,000 to £25,000
Four deadlines per year. The next deadline is 11 January
With priorities including arts and heritage, education, environment and social or economic disadvantage, the Steel Charitable Trust offers grants to cover core costs or the cost of capital works or specific projects. School projects that have successfully received funding in the past have included moving play equipment and laying a safety surface, and creating an imaginative outdoor reading area. Visit
