READING FOR PLEASURE KS2 Children’s Choice Collections

The books within these collections have been specifically chosen by primary school children, so you can guarantee they are full of laugh-out-loud moments, adrenaline fuelled storylines and crazy, colourful characters.

Our Children’s Choice project has been a fulfilling exercise, giving us direct access to what young readers say about books and an invaluable insight into which books children truly enjoy reading.

Research shows that when children can choose their own books, from an appealing selection, levels of motivation, enjoyment and comprehension are much higher than when reading to improve literacy skills specifically.

Sarah Capon

Book Collections Developer

Every pupil is sure to enjoy picking a book from these hand-picked selections enthusiastically recommended by their peers at Hillcrest Primary School. We were not surprised to find that the books that made children laugh were chosen time and time again. However, we were surprised to see the broad range of books that children chose as their top favourites and their reasons for choosing them.

We visited local school, Hillcrest Primary, to find out which books their KS2 children would choose to read. Each class was given a

wide selection of books to read, review and rate.

The pupils had fun comparing and sharing books before deciding which ones were their favourites. Their wonderful book reviews were collated and read back here at Badger HQ where Sarah used the ratings and comments to curate these rich and varied reading collections that should hit the spot for each year group in KS2.
