Your 60-Second Guide to Probiotics


When it comes to the Things That Are Good for Us, most of them are pretty straightforward: drink water, sleep eight hours per night, and hug cute animals. So what are probiotics then? What do they do and do we really need them?


WHAT’S A PROBIOTIC? Probiotics are bacteria and yeasts found naturally in our bodies, and they help us with digestion, nutrient absorption, fat metabolism, mood and energy balance, and immunity. 


DO WE REALLY NEED MORE? Many factors, including chronic stress, food ad- ditives, and even overexposure to antibacterial products can alter our microbial composition and kill beneficial bacteria.


WHERE CAN WE GET THEM? Probiotics are found almost everywhere, but are most plentiful in fermented foods, such as


kimchee, kombucha, and some yogurts. They can also be found in probiotic supplements.


HOW TO PICK A PROBIOTIC Look for the number of strains included and survivability. No one probiotic strain can do it all, so look for a supplement with a variety of different strains. Probiotic bacteria can be killed easily by light, high temperatures, and exposure to stomach acids, so a quality pro- biotic supplement should include information on how many of them make it to your gut alive. For an added bonus, look for supplements that include prebiotic fiber to feed probiotic bac- teria. We kept all these factors in mind when designing our new Kids Probiotic Complete.
