Building big data solutions for the big and the small

Tamas Erni, managing partner of Loxon, says big data gives banks a far higher predictive power - they have fewer losses and they find the delinquent customer before there is even a problem

Senior Editor Bill Boyle

partner of Loxon: “We are identifying to our business customers, through the implementation of big data solutions, many areas where their early warning systems are failing or could perform a lot better. Big data can provide rich functionality and unlock the hidden treasures within an organisation.

“We have just finished a big data project in the Middle East for a bank to provide a better predictive model for early warnings of unhealthy clients. We put together an end to end environment

– which also utilised an Oracle database which used transactional data and external data which they hadn’t used before to try to understand complex customer behaviour.

“The result was an early-warning system to identify risky customer behaviour. And because we were using such huge data sets, which Hadoop makes so easy to dive into, we were able to predict what customers were becoming problematic and which customers were showing very early signs of being ones whose actions would cause the banks problems in the short to medium term. That is very valuable because only an intelligent big data setup can much better spot those tiny signs in errant behaviour, mark them out and identify the

customers well before they become a problem.”

Loxon used an Oracle tool called Big Data Appliance (BDA) which consists of both hardware and software infrastructure. It includes Cloudera’s distribution, Apache Hadoop and Hyve components. Oracle BDA is a flexible, high-performance, secure platform for running diverse workloads on Hadoop and NoSQL systems. With Oracle Big Data SQL, Oracle Big Data Appliance builds out Oracle’s implementation of SQL to Hadoop and NoSQL systems. Erni says: “There is no big secret for using big data techniques. We deploy Loxon consultants in tandem with Loxon solutions to build better quality models for risk modelling or modelling an organisation’s sales and marketing operations.

“They can see the customer’s bad behaviour at the very beginning – the earlier you see the signs the more money you will recover. We allow the bank to build a scorecard to not just identify non-performing customers but to find new customers, particularly within the growing small to medium sized business communities. We can help in the acquiring of new customers.”

Erni says that the Middle East project only took a matter of months to build the initial infrastructure. “Big data changes the way that you see and extract value from your data and it helps you to see your data as a lake of useful information. Loxon provides visualisation methods using visualisation tools so that clients can see their existing data complete with obvious patterns of client behaviour.”
