Tip: The thinner the wire used to make the jump ring, the more flexible it will be: so if you need a strong link for a piece, you should select a component made of a thicker gauge wire, this will help to ensure it is not pulled open inadvertently.

Lobster and Carabiner Clasps: Trigger clasps such as the lobster and carabiner styles perform the same function as a bolt ring, but are stronger and more decorative. A lobster clasp has parallel sides and appears slightly more functional looking, whereas a carabiner is tapered and more rounded at one end and looks a little more decorative. Both open inwards which makes them very secure as this means they can’t be pulled open. They are supplied with a secure, closed loop and will need to be attached with an additional jump ring. They are available in a wide range of sizes but 9mm-11mm are the most popular.

Ring and Toggle Clasp: You would normally use a ring and toggle fitting on a heavier weight bracelet. It comes in two parts and consists of an oversized ring and T-shaped bar which is pulled through the ring to secure it. Once in place the T-bar overlaps the edges of the ring and the weight of the bracelet pulls the fittings against each other making them secure.

Albert Swivels Clasp: Albert swivel clasps were traditionally used on long pocket watch chains. The base of the clasp is designed to turn 360 degrees allowing full manoeuvrability of whatever is attached to it, without causing stress to clothing or the body. Today these clasps are available fixed or with the conventional swivel and would be used when you want to make a feature of the clasp. Sizes range from 13mm – 28mm.
