Findings Guide

Tip: If you are not yet confident enough to attempt stone setting, pre-made bezels are available which allow a stone to be simply glued in onto a solid base.

Collet: A collet is a tapered stone setting traditionally used for faceted stones. The sides of a collet are often cut out into intricate patterns leaving only the claws at the top prominent to secure the stone. A locating indent is cut into the inside face of the collet where the girdle (the widest part of the circumference) of the stone will rest, leaving only the claws sitting proud.

Brooch Backs: Brooch fittings consist of a hinged pin and a corresponding safety catch which are often secured together on a fixed base plate. These components can be bought separately or as one piece and a complete brooch back comprises of all the fittings needed, ready to be attached to your item.

Pendant Fittings: Pendant fittings allow an item to be suspended and generally consist of some sort of bail which is often V-shaped. A bail can be attached by soldering or connecting via a ring or hook and simply provides a loop which a chain can pass through. Other findings can also be successfully used as pendant bails such as sections of tube and closed jump rings.

Brooch Pin: As the name suggests, a brooch pin refers to only the pin component of a brooch fitting. They come in a range of sizes from 25mm – 51mm and allow a brooch fitting to be constructed to bespoke specifications. They have a loop or flag fitting at one end which locates into a joint. A wire is then passed through the hole in the centre to create a hinge mechanism.
