Financial planning, legal & retirement

13 FEBRUARY 2021 • THE GOOD LIFE DISTRIBUTED WITH THE SATURDAY DAILY MAIL S

ome 31 million people in the UK haven’t written a Will. Tis means 59% of people don’t know who’ll

be responsible for their property, financial and other assets when they die, according to research by life insurer Canada Life. Verity Kirby, legal director in

the private client team at law firm, Shakespeare Martineau, however, believes it’s very important to do so: “A Will provides you with peace of mind, ensuring your estate passes in accordance with your wishes. Not having one risks leaving your loved ones short of funds and could also result in costly legal claims. Other benefits include being able to protect vulnerable beneficiaries and the chance to leave money to charity.” You should update your Will

GETTY Where there’s a Will

Despite being hugely important, more than half of adults in the UK don’t have a valid Will. Here’s why you shouldn’t delay in getting one written up and how you can do it for free. Words: Sabuhi Gard

after major life events such as getting married, buying a home, starting a family, getting divorced or suffering a bereavement. “While no one likes to think

about their own mortality, getting your house in order can take away much of the emotional and financial pressure at a very difficult time,” says Canada Life’s Neil Jones.

SPEAK TO A PROFESSIONAL: Shona Lowe, private client and corporate director at financial planning firm 1825, explains:

Most people will benefit from Free Wills Month in March and October every year

“Will writing isn’t a regulated market, so it’s very important to choose a well-regulated specialist. Tat doesn’t have to be a solicitor, but it does have to be an experienced professional.

USE FREE SERVICES Drafting a Will should be inexpensive, but in some cases, there are specialist estate planners delivering extremely complex advice and some can cost thousands of pounds. Most people will benefit from Free Wills Month, in March and October every year, in which they can get one written up for free via an associated charity.

AVOID AMBIGUITY Contested Wills were at an all-time high in 2019 according to the Ministry of Justice. Zoe Bailey, financial planner at Tilney, advises to be sure your Will avoids any ambiguity. Consulting a solicitor is the best way to ensure it accurately reflects your wishes and has clear instructions for the beneficiaries.
