Cash in the attic I
t’s no secret that us Brits love collecting. A whopping 83% of UK adults surveyed by
Te Royal Mint said they’ve collected something at some point in their lives. And the Covid-19 pandemic
has given rise to a wave of new collectors, says collectables expert Tracy Martin. Tose in the know are snapping up items with a link to the events of 2020,
“Te pandemic is playing a
massive part in world history,” says Tracy. “I’ve kept Boris Johnson’s letter to the nation, which was sent to everyone during the first lockdown. It’s part of our history, so it may have collectability in the future. “Other things to look out for
are any sports memorabilia connected to 2020, such as the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, which was postponed but

memorabilia had already been dated,” she adds. “Also, items produced by any already established collectables manufacturer, such as the Harrods and Merrythought 2020 Christmas bears.” If you’re more of a literary
buff, turning your attention to rare and collectable books could be a wise investment. Shapero Rare Books has seen its online business grow from
around 10% through to 50% during the pandemic. “It brought us three to five years into the future overnight,” says Bernard Shapero, CEO of Shapero Rare Books and Shapero Modern. “Early books on computers
from the post-war period are especially sought after,” he says. “And works by the late mathematician Alan Turing have risen in value recently, while novels by John le Carré, who passed away in December 2020, are having a mini boom.”
HOW TO GET STARTED “Books can be very rare but not worth much,” says Bernard. “It’s a matter of desirability combined with scarcity that equals value.”
You can, at least, take
comfort in the knowledge that rare books are typically a low-risk investment. “With artworks, however, it’s easier to caught in a swing,” he says. “As with anything, look to a
subject or style that interests you. Find an expert advisor who you can build a rapport with and go from there.” Looking to other popular
collectables, Tracy says the strongest markets are for vinyl, books, toys and fashion, along with things for the home. “Collectors look for those hard- to-find items, such as complete vintage toys in original packaging or rare colourways of die-cast toy cars,” she says.”

Give stories, not stuff
If you’re looking to kick off the New Year as you mean to go on, why not give the gift of experience and start dreaming of a fresh start
Tinggly is on a worldwide mission to change the culture of gifting by encouraging everyone to give experiences rather than material things. Right now, your
loved ones
could be deciding whether to take a private gondola ride in Venice, a helicopter tour over the Niagara Falls or a snorkelling trip with turtles in Hawaii — all thanks to you. Giving an experience not only
gives the recipient the freedom of choice, but is proven to bring more happiness and satisfac- tion to our lives. Here’s how it works: you
purchase a gift box; Tinggly sends an e-voucher or delivers a plastic-free gift box; and the recipient chooses from hundreds of experiences across more than 100 countries. As there’s no expiry date on Tinggly gift experiences,
they
can be used whenever the recip- ient wishes — so there’s no worries about them going off at the back of a cupboard, either.
