ARTS AND DESIGN COLLEGES

The creativity advantage

Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem and Shenkar College are two examples of higher education institutions leveraging their creative culture to have a positive impact

Shenkar College This Israeli academy of engineering, art and design is pitched right between the city of Ramat Gan’s verdant gardens and gleaming skyscrapers, with the perpetual fun and long, hazy nights of Tel Aviv just down the road. Vibrant and cosmopolitan, it’s garnered a reputation for the pedigree of its students and innovation in its faculties, where the college’s creatives work together to help shape future technologies. Undergraduate degrees run from textile and

jewelry design to visual communication and electrical or software engineering. Graduates of Shenkar’s fashion design program step into jobs and internships with renowned designers, revel in prestigious exhibitions and win internationally recognized awards. The master’s programs, meanwhile, delve deeper into subjects such as digital game design and development or polymer material engineering.

Like many other Israeli institutions, Shenkar is

mindful of remaining ahead of the green curve. Its Rozen Center for Sustainability serves as a knowledge and research hub in the field, ensuring sustainability principles are integrated into all departments in line with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2020, for the first time, the center awarded

the Rozen Award for Sustainability to 10 positive-impact projects submitted by fresh graduates of the Faculty of Engineering and Design, all of which addressed at least three SDGs. Judged by representatives of the public sector, industry and academia, the awards consisted of NIS 20,000 (approximately $6,000). Winning projects included the Cooling Island,

an infrastructure for growing plants without soil and harnessing their ability to act as natural air filters, lower temperatures and attract wildlife to concrete urban corners.

The country’s colleges and academies are home to diverse and colorful student communities
