9 MAY 2022 THE TRAVEL GUIDE — AN ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE IN Restoring and regreening the drylands
Sand Dams Worldwide helps some of the world’s poorest people to transform their own lives through water and soil conservation in arid areas
T e UK charity works with local in-country partners to help vulner- able rural dryland communities build sand dams — sustainable and cost-eff ective rainwater-harvesting technology that can capture up to 40 million litres of water, replen- ishing every rainy season. T e water is stored so that it’s safe from disease and evaporation in the sand. It’s easily extractable via pipework connected to hand pumps and taps, with one sand dam providing enough water year-round for more than 1,000 people. For more information about how sand dams work, watch this short animation: sanddamsworld-
wide.org.uk/what-is-a-sand-dam Sand dams play a signifi cant role
in mitigating the eff ects of climate change, including reversing land degradation. T ey
raise ground-
water levels by slowing down the rate of runoff and capturing rain- water that would otherwise be lost, while allowing most water to continue downstream. T e slowing down of runoff allows water to infi l- trate the soil, resulting in vegetation recovery, reduced erosion, regreened environments and the restoration of degraded land. Although the work of Sand Dams
Worldwide usually starts with a sand dam, it doesn’t end there. Once enough water and time are available, a wealth
of opportunities arise. T e charity also works with partners to advise communities on improved, climate- smart agriculture techniques, such as terracing, developing seed banks and the planting of drought-resistant crops and trees. T is empowers fami- lies to grow enough food to eat, store and sell in the face of climate change and drought. Sand Dams Worldwide currently
runs programmes in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Ethiopia and two in Kenya (one in the southeast working with self-help community groups, and another in Tsavo National Park focusing on supporting local wildlife).
Lifetime achievements Since 2002, Sand Dams Worldwide has enabled the construction of more than 1,000 sand dams across 10 countries, providing more than one million people with lifelong access to clean water. T e organisation has also
supported communities to dig over 1.8 million metres of terracing and plant more than 1.1 million trees.

‘MY REFLUX AND HEARTBURN ARE GONE’
Gary Sizer had suffered with heartburn and reflux for ten years. His symptoms became more frequent, more painful and longer lasting.
‘My wife and I found IQoro and looked at the science, the customer stories and the description of what was causing the symptoms. After thorough research, I bought one. IQoro has been very successful for me. I rarely experience any discomfort now and I have reduced my PPI intake greatly too. I highly recommend this product and treatment to other potential users.’
IQoro is a training device which addresses the underlying causes of conditions such as reflux, heartburn, snoring and swallowing difficulties. The training only takes a total of 90 seconds a day.
