12TH JUNE 2023

Worldwide Traveller 17

WEST CORNWALL Be inspired by the selection of

low-season experiences, including stargazing, electric bike hire and swimming in the UK’s largest seawater lido, Jubilee Pool — on the last day of the season, you can even go for a dip with your dog. Hardcore cyclists looking for a

challenge can tackle the western half of the Cornish peninsula on the West Kernow Way, a 140-mile bike- packing route by Cycling UK.

launched in 2021

Pas-de-Calais A trip to the Pas-de-Calais region is a dream for outdoor sports enthusi- asts, thanks to new app Escapade62, which matches users with a wide range of activities. Rafting, climbing

and cycling can all be enjoyed

against a backdrop of spectacular landscapes in any season. Te Vélomaritime cycle route,

which takes you along the Opal Coast, is ideal for all abilities. It passes near sites of interest including the beach resort Le Touquet Paris- Plage and Hardelot Castle. Enjoy a tranquil guided trip on

a traditional boat in the Marais Audomarois, a UNESCO-designated wetland reserve north of Paris. Home to more than 1,800 animal and plant species, it offers a glimpse of nature at its wildest. For something on the quirkier side,

go hiking, mountain biking or trail riding among the slag heaps of the Pays à Part, near Lens, which rise to a

height of 590ft. Tis historical mining area is popular with walkers and sports enthusiasts.

Compiègne Te huge national forest of Compiègne,

just one hour from

Paris, is a paradise for walkers and nature-lovers. Visitors are welcomed all year

round with activities including forest bathing, horse riding, cycling and treasure hunts, plus a programme of festivals and events in the heart of the forest, centred on its open-air theatre. Among the attractions is the newly

restored Empress Arbor, a 2,460ft- long

Napoleonic tunnel made of ornate iron, which walk-through

BRITTANY

connects the gardens of the Chateau de Compiege to the wilderness of the forest. It’s worth finding your way to the charming Saint-Pierre Ponds, a beautifully peaceful setting for a spot of fishing, a stroll or cycle. An immersive historic centre

within Compiègne’s museum offers a fun, interactive way to discover the rich history of the area.

Brittany A visit to beautiful Morlaix and Côtes-d’Armor is worth the trip what- ever the time of year, especially for beach-lovers. Try water-walking with Carantec

Nautisme in the heart of the Bay of Morlaix to improve your circula- tion, balance and endurance. Braver

travellers may want to try ice-swim- ming without a wetsuit in Côtes- d’Armor — herbal tea on the beach and breathing exercises will help prepare you to take the plunge. After braving waters as cold as 8C, you’re sure to emerge feeling exhilarated. Learn how to find, harvest and

cook seaweed, touted as a food of the future, during an outing along the Brittany coast in Locquirec. If you head to Côtes-d’Armor in

October, look up Les Minutes Bleues, a six-day event at cultural and natural heritage sites to celebrate the tran- sition to wintertime, which includes a monastic breakfast in an abbey, an excursion to learn about

local

Brittany legends and the chance to discover hidden secrets in a chateau.
