Enriching young lives with outdoor adventure

Why aren’t school residential trips compulsory? Tey should be. Outdoor adventure and experiential learning provider Kingswood is championing the impact of brilliant residentials on children’s holistic development. From the adventure of an away-from-home experience with their peers, to building resil- ience by being challenged in outdoor activities, children can find learning opportunities in school trips that can’t be matched in a classroom setting. It’s not surprising that the negative impact of the pandemic is still being felt by children and young people. What is encouraging is the positive behavioural

change that

outdoor adventure can bring about. So much so that Kingswood’s

latest research, in the peer-reviewed Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning, provides evidence that outdoor learning across Kings- wood’s 11 residential centres had an immediate and statistically signif- icant impact on the young partici- pants, who reported a 36% increase in resilience, and 23% increase in psychological wellbeing. What’s more,

the impacts are shown to

endure, with 94% of participants stating that they felt more self- confident one month following their experience. It’s clear that outdoor learning positively impacts chil- dren’s capacity to cope with uncer- tainty, and improves

their stress

responses, creating healthier, more adaptable youngsters. Next time you’re considering

school trip, think about their oppor- tunities to build lasting connections with their camp mates and teachers. As a species, humans have thrived by connecting with others and facing challenges together. Trough shared experiences on a residential, young people bond and build supportive, meaningful relationships. Encour- agement from teachers also impacts children’s willingness to try some- thing new outside their everyday areas of comfort. Tis supportive exposure to adventure generates confidence that can be transferred back to the classroom as new chal- lenges arise. So, this academic year, if your

child has the chance to take part in a school residential, grasp it with both hands. Kingswood’s outdoor adven- tures are accessible to all children including those who face financial hardship or are affected by serious illness, either personally or through a parent or carer. Fully funded places are available for children and young people between six and 18 years of age as part of Kingswood’s hardship fund for schools.*
