Specialist medical care for newborn babies and children
Te role of the paediatrician and neonatologist by Dr Olga Kapellou, consultant paediatrician and neonatologist at Te Portland Hospital
As a consultant paediatrician and neonatologist, I take great pride in providing vital care to those newborn babies who require specialist treatment. Te unique expertise I’ve devel-
oped ensures I’m perfectly placed to offer advanced assessments and treatment to children who experi- ence health problems at birth until much later.
Caring for newborns as well as young children Alongside my work as an NHS consultant, I have a private prac- tice at London’s prestigious Port- land Hospital. I work closely with a multidisciplinary team treating newborns who require admission to the neonatal unit as well as infants and older children. Te conditions we treat are wide-
ranging; I care for children experi- encing both complex and common paediatric symptoms including:
• Colics • Reflux • Cow’s milk protein allergy • Rashes • Faltering growth • Development issues
In the event of problematic births Te majority of births occur smoothly; however, problems occa- sionally arise and admission to a neonatal unit
is required. Tis is
often related to multiple pregnan- cies or growth restriction. Indeed, one in 13 babies is born
early and has low birth weight. In these cases, the neonatologist liaises with the obstetrician, attends the delivery and, if necessary, stabilises the newborn baby. Occasionally, unexpected prob-
lems arise at birth, sometimes caused by infection or, in rare instances, more severe issues that can lead to brain injury for the baby. Newborn babies greatly benefit from the very latest diagnostic proce- dures, such as newborn brain MRI and early therapy interventions, to optimise the outcome and help chil- dren achieve their full potential.
The importance of compassion and communication Communicating compassionately with the baby’s parents is a vital part of a neonatologist’s role, who will also check the baby after the neonatal period to support any ongoing medical needs.

Communicating compassionately with the baby’s parents is a vital part of the role
Annual check-ups are useful to
assess nutritional status, growth, development and any conditions that can affect or interfere with school performance and wellbeing.
Supporting children’s development Of course, the parents are the ones who will make the biggest difference in their child’s life, and it’s the privi- lege of the paediatrician to give them the support they need. All children build up their health,
strength, skills and abilities as they progress throughout childhood and beyond, and most babies do remark- ably well — even following complica- tions. It’s our duty to help them fulfil their potential.
