Set against the stunning backdrop of the Austrian Alps, Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, is a cultural jewel. Its baroque architecture, charming Old Town, and musical heritage make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• MORNING: Travelers should start the day by exploring Mirabell Palace and Gardens, a masterpiece of baroque design. Here, they can marvel at the grandeur of the palace. The garden offers picturesque views of Hohensalzburg Fortress and the city beyond, while its Pegasus Fountain famously featured in The Sound of Music.
• LUNCH: Gastronomes should indulge in a culinary adventure at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, one
of the oldest restaurants in Europe (dishes have been served here since CE 803). Located within St. Peter’s Archabbey, the restaurant offers a historic ambiance and a menu featuring Austrian specialties. A leisurely lunch can be enjoyed in the charming courtyard or the elegant dining rooms, savoring dishes that highlight the rich culinary heritage of Salzburg.
• AFTERNOON: A post-lunch climb to the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress, a medieval masterpiece perched atop Festungsberg Hill, is a great way to blow away the cobwebs. First constructed in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, its initial purpose was defensive, protecting the principality from invasions. Despite facing numerous sieges, Hohensalzburg remained unconquered, earning it a
reputation as one of Europe’s best- preserved medieval fortresses. As visitors wander through the castle, they will see impressive medieval architectural details before making the ascent of the tower for stunning views of the city, Salzach river and the Alps. There are many exhibits, including the dungeon, the Golden Hall, the Royal Apartments and the Armoury, which was originally the storage facility for the fortress canons and guns. Today, there are suits of armour, swords, canons and other weaponry on display.
• EVENING: Guests should stroll down the enchanting Getreidegasse, a bustling pedestrian street in Salzburg’s Old Town. This historic thoroughfare, lined with pastel- colored buildings is a classic Salzburg experience. Among the
treasures of Getreidegasse is Mozart’s Birthplace, a distinctive yellow house (now a museum) where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756. Whether you’re after historical insights or a leisurely shopping experience, Getreidegasse offers an atmospheric journey through Salzburg’s cultural tapestry.
• NIGHT: For a quintessential Salzburg experience, attend a classical concert. The historic Festival District is home to the Great Festival House, House for Mozart and Felsenreitschule, all of which offer an eclectic range of musical events. If there’s anywhere to truly experience the joys of music, it’s in the incomparably atmospheric setting of Salzburg.
