Clockwise from far left: Great Salt Lake, Utah; Rachel Carson Bridge and Allegheny river, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Medicine Bow Range, Wyoming

Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests, Wyoming In Wyoming, some 350 miles further on, take a detour off the route to check out Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. Just south of the I-80, they contain portions of five mountain ranges, vast valleys and great canyons, each deserving of attention and exploration. From lakes to ski areas, there’s plenty to occupy and entertain those looking for outdoor activities, plus there are 10 designated Wilderness Areas to help you get a true dose of the wild on this great road trip.

Lake Michigan A 1,000-mile stretch takes drivers through the states of Nebraska and Iowa to Illinois, where the I-80 passes the southern tip of Lake Michigan. Stop at the Indiana Dunes National Park to take in one of the Great Lakes and explore one of the world’s biggest lakefront sand dunes, as well as the woodlands, trails and wetlands that trace 15 miles of the coastline. There are 15,000 acres of protected parkland to discover, in which visitors will find 350 species of birds. From here, venture into Chicago for day trips. Just a 45-minute drive away, it is a great addition for those wanting to explore the Windy City and its epic culinary heritage.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Veer off the highway, 400 miles further, to Pittsburgh for a last dose of urban adventure before the road wraps up on the east coast. The ‘Steel City’ has reinvented itself in recent years to harness a new wave of innovation that makes it a fascinating destination. The birthplace of Andy Warhol has kept its artistic legacy, becoming a magnet for contemporary artists and galleries, from the great Carnegie Museum of Art to the quirky Mattress Factory. In fact, from baseball to bridges, the city has much to offer anyone who stops here on their great coast-to-coast adventure. The I-80 will head on from Pittsburgh to Teaneck, New Jersey, where the adventure ends.
