“Te Agrolux 65 has been a cost-effective investment,” Mr Crabb says, “it’s in steady use throughout the year when the conditions are right.”

rear linkage can lift up to 9,700kg. Four PTO speeds at the rear (540, 540ECO, 1000, 1000ECO) come as standard, as well as an optional 1000 or 1000ECO at the front.

Excellent visibility and comfort Te four-cylinder models come with a MaxiVision cab and the new InfoCen- trePro, a new armrest and improve- ments to all-round view and oper- ating convenience. Fourth generation LED lights are available as an option to enhance visibility during night work. All models can be equipped with Agrosky and are thus ready for precision farming. A recent recipient of a fleet of

DEUTZ-FAHR tractors is 1,235 acre (500ha) mixed farmer Peter Wilkinson of PJ Wilkinson in Formby, Lanca- shire, who also runs a DEUTZ-FAHR 6095HTS combine harvester to power a diverse enterprise. “We have sheep and beef, and grow

Versatile Deutz-Fahr tractors — for all farm applications

Large farming organisations require well-built, high-quality tractors to provide the horsepower needed to operate across a host of enterprises and disciplines. DEUTZ-FAHR tractors provide the flexibility and versatility across its range to match the needs of today’s discerning farm operator

With new developments and tech- nical updates necessary to match the pressures of modern agriculture, DEUTZ-FAHR never falls short of expectation and delivers upgrades to match the very best of kit available to the UK market. Most recently, the company has

added three new four-cylinder models to its existing 6 Series six-cyl- inder range. Te modular high-tech system now includes a 6155.4, 6165.4 and 6175.4 as a top model. All models

in the range now

feature higher permissible weights (11,500kg) and a longer wheelbase (2,543mm) for improved stability and a comfortable driving performance. Te design features on the four-cyl- inder models are similar to those of the six-cylinder versions, which won the Best Design category at Tractor of the Year 2017. Te 156hp, 164hp and 171hp Deutz TCD 4.1L four-cylinder engines

comply with the European stage IV emission standards. Te new engines offer a hefty starting torque and high torque reserves across a wide speed range. In addition to a compact cooling system, which can be opened completely and easily cleaned,

the

TTV models are also equipped with a new electric Visco fan.

Efficient and safe Tree transmission variants are avail- able: from the simple, manual five- speed powershift transmission with six forward powershift stages and three reverse stages (30+15 gears) and the newly developed fully auto- matic RCshift gearbox (30+15 gears, with creeper gear 54+27 gears), to the efficient TTV transmission for continuous driving and working from nought to 31mph (50km/h). For all transmissions, the maximum

speed is achieved at a reduced engine speed in order to save fuel. On the

only 1,530 rpm, saving fuel and reducing noise. Another unique feature of this

tractor class is the front axle with suspension, which is equipped with an anti-dive and anti-rise control as well as a booster brake system. Tis ensures maximum traction and safety in all situations. Te hydraulic system has also been

adopted from the six-cylinder models and can be configured individually depending on the operation require- ments. Te standard pump capacity is 84litre/min on the basic models, and an LS system with a capacity of 120litre/min as standard on the higher spec models, with options of 160 or 170litre/min. Up to five elec- tro-hydraulic auxiliary control valves can be selected at the rear, and two at the front. All electronic valves can be proportionally controlled. Te position-controlled front

potatoes, fodder beet, carrots and grass as well as combinable crops,” explains Mr Wilkinson. “We aim to match tractors to particular roles to ensure that they have the right spec- ification for the job.” Tus, a 250hp DEUTZ-FAHR 7250 is

mainly used for planting potatoes and drilling, while a 175hp DEUTZ-FAHR 6180 takes care of lifting potatoes and baling. A pair of 155hp DEUTZ- FAHR 6160s are general workhorses and haulage tractors, while a 116hp DEUTZ-FAHR 5120 powers the Keenan diet feeder. Te compact dimensions and

nimbleness of the DEUTZ-FAHR 110hp Agrofarm loader tractor ensures that it’s first choice for hay and straw deliv- eries to equestrian customers, who may often have restricted yard space. Mr Wilkinson has also recently

taken delivery of two DEUTZ-FAHR flagship 9310 TTV tractors fitted with the Agrosky Precision Farming Steering System. “We’ve moved to minimum tillage

(min till) and our Mzuri drill takes a surprising amount of pulling on lighter land where it goes directly into stubble, so the powerful 7250 is ideal; it also handles a 3.5m subsoiler,” says Mr Wilkinson. “Te DEUTZ- FAHR machines somehow seem to get horsepower down to the ground better than other similar sized tractors we’ve tried. “For potato planting, this tractor

pulls a four-row planter mounted on a four-row bedformer, often in no till conditions; here, the 7250s 10-tonne lift capacity comes in handy.” Te DEUTZ-FAHR 7250 and 6180

both feature DEUTZ-FAHR’s TTV step- less transmission — Mr Wilkinson comments: “Tis has offered signifi- cant fuel savings when drilling as it works with the engine to manage revs according to workload; similarly, when planting potatoes you can go in quickly in good conditions or it’ll work a bit steadier in poorer ground. “In conjunction with the switch

to min till, this has cut our fuel bill in half, as we also see impressive savings when mowing, baling and planting potatoes.” Te C-Shift robotised transmis-

sion on the DEUTZ-FAHR 6160s, which allows the driver to select ratios from the joystick without pressing the clutch pedal or using a shift lever, has proved versatile

enough to tackle jobs from carting to tedding, offering plenty of gears. Cab layout with the TTV trans-

mission is more straightforward than others on the market, says Mr Wilkinson. “I like the simple cab design, which has all the storage you need without encouraging clutter. Visibility is also good, due to the large glass area.” He points out that one of the major

qualities of the DEUTZ-FAHR range as a whole is reliability. “We rarely see our dealer, Cheshire

Farm Machinery, except for servicing, which wasn’t the case for other brands we’ve used. Tese tractors do exactly what it says on the tin, and are really underrated. Resale values have also stood up well too, with good trade-ins offered by the dealer.”

Reliable and versatile Reliability and versatility were key decision making factors when Dorset contractor David Crabb decided to downsize his business and it was the DEUTZ-FAHR’s all-round workhorse Agrolux 65, with its MX U303 frontend loader, which is still in the shed at Glebe Farm, Winterbourne Abbas in Dorset. Te search for a tractor that would

enable them to carry out the restruc- tured services led them to the four- wheel drive DEUTZ-FAHR Agrolux 65, which was purchased from DEUTZ- FAHR dealers MJ Fry Agricultural Engineers in Martinstown. Mr Crabb now works on a large farm full time during

stock the

summer and three days a week during the winter. “We wanted a general purpose

compact tractor in the 60 to 70hp bracket,” he says.

“We looked at a

number of different makes but, crit- ically, we weren’t convinced by their front end loader work, which would be one of the tractor’s main jobs. “Mike Fry introduced us to a local

contractor who was fencing with an Agrolux 65 fitted with a rear linkage mounted post driver. I drove the tractor for two hours and I liked it immediately. It stood out

from the

others in terms of its general build and its substantial front wheels. It’s nice and compact, extremely manoeu- vrable and all the controls are just where you want them. It’s also easy to get on and off,” says Mr Crabb. “At the time the exchange rate was

in our favour, which meant the DEUTZ was very competitively priced. We also specified the trailer braking valve option. It wasn’t available on other makes but we consider it essential for safe trailer work.” In two years, the Agrolux 65 has

proved its all-rounder abilities by clocking up 350hrs carrying out a number of tasks and is particularly suited to working in low buildings, and loading and towing trailers, including the Crabb’s five-ton capacity Marshall tipper, and bale stacking. “It’s remarkable what it can do and

it’s been reliable; we know MJ Fry provides a high standard of back-up but we haven’t had to call on it,” says Mr Crabb.
