Holiday homes with heart
H
aving the most authentically conserved cottages in Wales’s best beach and mountain
locations isn’t enough for Dr Greg Stevenson, the architectural historian who directs Under Te Tatch. “We’re hugely sensitive to the
problem of second homes in rural Wales,” he says. “So we only take on projects that benefit, rather than damage,
their local commu-
nity: rescuing derelicts, converting outbuildings, and letting year-round at good value to provide regular work.” Tis is one of the reasons that UTT
won a Guardian/Observer Ethical Travel Award, up against international competition. Greg was one of the first to start the lime revival in building conservation in Wales 30 years ago and has built a curated collection
of gorgeous cottages with beautiful furnishings. Te most popular prop- erties are those he restored with conservationist Griff Rhys
Jones
(as seen on the BBC TV series A Pembrokeshire Farm), but he’s since branched out to restore a handful of properties in Ireland, Poland and on the continent. “We’re not trying to be Airbnb
— our business is built on solid community ethics, and when you pick up the phone our staff know all of our 70 houses personally,” says Greg. “It’s that personal touch that has helped us survive the past few tough years in the tourism business, and 2023 looks set to be our busiest season ever.”
