Legendary Mediterranean taste destination: 7 Mehmet
Antalya, one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, also attracts the attention of the gastronomy world with the legend it harbours
F
rom master to grandfather, from father to son. In 1937, grandfather Mehmet
Akdag established a modest restau- rant with one table, four chairs and a water jug where a few people could dine. In 1967, Mehmet hosted Turkey’s first tourist group. When a 60-person British tourist group filmed the restau- rant’s beautifully
presented dishes
featuring delicious local flavours from start to finish and broadcast the show in England, the restaurant’s name transcended Turkey’s borders as 7 Mehmet. With a menu featuring modern Mediterranean flavours and seasonal variations of traditional Turkish cuisine, today the restaurant offers an incredible 650 dishes and 150 signature plates.
Second generation takes the helm In 1988, chef Hakkı Akdag took over the restaurant — the second gener- ation of the family to run it. In 1997, the restaurant moved locations to the Atatürk Culture Park, famous for its award-winning pyramid-shaped architecture inspired by the Taurus Mountains, designed by architect Özcan Kırmızıoglu, who observed sunrises and sunsets for a month and harmonised them with the pastel tones of autumn.
In 2013, with the
passing of Hakkı Akdag, the third-gen- eration of the family, Mehmet Akdag, took over as head chef and manager of the restaurant.
Approaching taste from a variety of different angles Starting his culinary education under the guidance of his master and father, Hakkı Akdag, at the age of two, Mehmet Akdag brought unique experiences to gastronomy enthusi- asts by applying meat, chicken and fish cooking techniques to vegetables and vegetable cooking techniques to meats. Taking the legacy left by his grandfather and father to even higher levels, Mehmet Akdag published the 7 Mehmet Cookbook, containing 60 recipes, 30 of which are signature dishes, in 2022. With this book, Akdag managed to win the World’s Best Cookbook award from the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards out of 28,000 books in Sweden. Additionally, it was selected as the best restaurant book on the Silk Road and the spice route in a special awards ceremony held in Riyadh.
