LEGAL ADVICE, PRIVATE CLIENT & LEGACIES 33 The will to donate

There’s good news for charities as new fi gures show legacy giving has hit an all-time high. Words: Connor McGovern

The year 2015 saw a record number of charitable donations from wills, according to a recent study by Smee & Ford, the UK’s leading trusted legacy information provider. The study found more than 37,000 wills in probate in England, Wales and Scotland in 2015 included a charity donation — the highest number of charitable estates ever recorded, up from 34,908 in 2014. The value of donations grew to £2.3bn in 2015 (up 5% from 2014) and an average of three charity benefi ciaries were included in each donor’s will. The results of the study were released

in September 2015, ahead of Remember A Charity Week, a scheme set up by the organisation of the same name that encourages the public to pass on something ‘legendary’ by remembering a charity in their will. The study was welcome news to

Remember A Charity’s director Rob Cope. “Legacies have never been more important to charities,” he commented. “These fi ndings are great news, showing that more people are choosing to remember a charity in their will than ever before.” Those born between 1925 and 1945

were found to be the most charitable, with six in 10 charitable estates coming from this older age group. Baby boomers

are generous, too, accounting for around 10% of charitable estates. But, despite the positive increase in legacy giving, Remember A Charity is still keen to get people thinking about making charitable donations when writing their will. “While the marketplace has benefi ted

from an increase in property and share prices in recent years, it’s the continued appetite for legacy giving among supporters that remains critical to long- term market growth,” says Cope. More than 70% of people said they were

happy to leave a donation in their will, once family and friends were looked after, but, sadly, only 7% of the population actually do leave anything after they’re gone. Charities rely heavily on donations

and many would be unable to continue without legacy gifts. A gift in your will is an incredible way to leave a lasting legacy, helping charities to carry on their work. rememberacharity.org.uk smeeandford.com

LEAVE A GIFT FOR OUR ANIMAL FRIENDS

BATTERSEA DOGS AND CATS HOME

Enid was rescued by Battersea

as a stray. She’d been so poorly bred, her hip joints were deformed, leaving her unable to sit or walk properly. Her skin was infected and she was found to have a serious

heart condition. Enid was given a second chance in life and was rehomed by Battersea’s head of canine behaviour, Ali Taylor,

who’s an expert in caring for dogs with complex needs. A gift in

your will could help more dogs like Enid, visit battersea.org.uk/forever
