Doctors have been looking for a successful treatment for osteoarthritic knee pain for many years. Although knee replacement surgery is generally successful, most patients who are referred are not suitable for surgery. Until recently these patients could only be treated with medication or weight loss and exercise. Painkillers can be very effective, however there can be risks associated with their long term use and many patients simply don’t like the idea of having to take long term medication for their knee pain. Whilst weight loss is often very effective, many patients often can’t manage this and exercising the knee is difficult when the knee is painful.
