EXCLUSIVE REPORT : HOLIDAYS STILL A PRIORITY DESPITE COST-OF-LIVING CRISIS

BY KIRSTY JOHNSTON kirsty@nitravelnews.com

AS 2024 comes into view, new research has shown that UK holidaymakers are set to spend a whopping £1,756 on international trips next year. Over 13.6 million of us have already booked elements of our travels abroad, with fear of missing out being reported as the biggest driver of early bookings - over a third of us (37%) booked early to avoid disappointment from sold out flights or accommodation. Having something to look forward to over the winter months (31%) follows closely second. Although the cost-of-living crisis is still at the forefront of everyone’s mind post- Christmas, it seems that the one thing we cannot live without in 2024 is our annual

holiday. In fact, according to American Express, whether domestic or overseas, the British public are set to go on an average of two holidays in 2024. With that in mind, NI Travel News asked local travel agents which destinations will make your money go further - with findings revealing that Egypt and Turkey will be the top value destinations for 2024 as holidaymakers aim to take advantage of favourable currency exchange rates. The number of Turkish Lira that can be bought for a UK pound has quadrupled from around eight in 2019 to 34 right now, with holidaymakers to Egypt getting almost 73% more for

their money in

comparison to 2022 - the equivalent of more than £210 extra on a £500 currency transaction.

British travellers to Sharm el-Sheikh will pay around £48 for a three-course meal for

two with a bottle of wine, compared with more than twice that amount in Antigua (£100) or Barbados (£105), according to Post Office Travel Money analysis. Adding to this, there were an additional 1.2 million seats on sale from the UK to Turkey in 2022 compared with 2019 and, according to reports, annual flight capacity is expected to grow by another 1.6 million seats by 2025, reaching a total of five million.
