LEADERSHIP

A Leadership Hat Trick

Anna Martini, executive vice-president and CFO of CH Group, owner of the Montreal Canadiens, on switching industries, the privilege of leadership and her favourite hockey player

Q

What’s it been like making the move from Groupe Dynamite (a women’s fashion

retailer) to the sports and entertainment business? Groupe Dynamite and CH Group have very similar missions. Both companies are about customer-centricity in which we’re creating great customer experiences, whether they’re shopping or at a concert.

Q: What are your management priorities?

Employees should believe in the company’s vision and direction. I always develop three-year strategic plans, so employees feel like they’re contributing to building something. Also, by setting clear objectives and encouraging project participation, you attract and retain talent.

After more than 30 years of experience in business and accounting, what does leadership mean to you? Firstly, it’s about day-to-day coaching. I have an open-door policy. Employees can come in and seek advice. Secondly, I find out the challenges employees want to take on and how I can help them meet these challenges and succeed. Also, leadership is a privilege — it’s a responsibility that is entrusted to you, and the result of teamwork. It’s really important to listen and to rally team members around a common goal. They have to be made accountable, which improves their performance and job satisfaction.

Q: Are you a hockey and Montreal Canadiens fan?

Yes, I grew up with hockey and the Canadiens. Every Saturday night my father watched the game on TV.

Q: Who’s your favourite player? Right now I’m excited about Jonathan Drouin, a young and very talented player. With the right support, he certainly has a lot to offer the team.

Anna Martini began at Deloitte LLP, then served as president of Groupe Dynamite. In May 2017 she was appointed executive vice-president and chief financial officer of CH Group, which owns the Montreal Canadiens, as well as Evenko, L’Équipe Spectra, the Bell Centre in downtown Montreal and Place Bell in Laval, Quebec. — Marie-Josée Boucher
