Preservation in situ

Preservation in situ may be implemented for heritage assets identified through non- intrusive archaeological assessments, intrusive assessments, or during the construction phase watching brief.

65

Heritage assets identified through DBA within the Onshore Cable Route that EAOW are committed to preserving in situ through reduction of the Development Area include:

• •

66

RSK ID 285 – Small cropmark ring ditch, interpreted as a possible Prehistoric or Roman hut circle

RSK ID 314 – Oval cropmark, possible long barrow

Heritage assets identified/defined during the proposed field assessment programme outlined in this WSI would be assessed as to whether preservation in situ is warranted and achievable. The decision as to where/whether preservation in situ should be undertaken would be made in agreement by EH, SCC and EAOW, taking into account other environmental constraints and mitigation requirements (see Part 1.6.2).

67 Where the conservation of the whole or a material part of a heritage asset’s significance is justified (i.e. for assets of demonstrably equivalent significance to a designated heritage asset), and where preservation in situ is achievable, one or more of the following mitigation techniques would be considered:

• •

Variation in the 35m route (within permitted deviation of 75m Onshore Cable Route) to avoid an identified area of archaeological sensitivity

Microrouting of the site compounds with the defined CCS sites;

Reduction of the cable working width/area to less than 35m where possible (and recognising additional width above 35m this may incur at each end of a section reduced swathe width)

Laying a suitable protective layer over an area of archaeological sensitivity for the duration of onshore electrical transmission construction works. Suitable protective layers can include bog mats or geotextile membranes

• •

HDD / or other trenchless techniques

Delineating areas of archaeological sensitivity with temporary fencing and signage where a variation in reinstatement practice should be adopted, such as avoidance of subsoil ripping
