Archaeological assessment and mitigation process and procedure Avoidance through route

adjustmentwill be subject to: engineering approval,

consideration of environmental constraints, completion of archaeological assessment and evaluation of the re-route

ArchaeologicalDesk-based Assessment (TechnicalAppendix to ES,November 2012)

Archaeological Field Reconnaissance Survey (TechnicalAppendix to ES,November 2012)

ArchaeologicalAerial Photograph Assessment (Technical Appendix to ES,November 2012)

Results ofGeophysical Survey (forthcoming) ↓ Pre-construction Phase Trial trenching

Trenches targeted to areas which have been identified as being ofhigh archaeological potential as indicated through non-intrusive assessment(s), orwithin areas ofknown

archaeological interest, to gather information regarding the extent, condition and nature of archaeological deposits.

Results of the trial trenchingwill be used to informfurther assessment andmitigation strategies

Pre-construction Phase Archaeological ‘Strip,Map and Record’

Where previous non-intrusive and trial trenching assessments has indicated significant archaeological potential, overburden (topsoil and subsoil) is removed across the 35m

workingwidth/HDD/CCS areas under the direction ofarchaeologists to the appropriate archaeological horizon in order to qualify the preservation of archaeological deposits.

Wherever trial-trenching has not been previously achievable, Archaeological ‘Strip, Map and Record’will be implemented in areas of archaeological potential.

↓ Avoid

Where possible and desirable sites will be preserved in situ through:

Adjustment of the cable route through variationwithin the 75mcorridor or Town andCountryPlanningAct

application;Reducing the workingwidth Protectionwith geotextilematting or bog mats; and careful reinstatement

↓↑ ↓ Construction Phase Watching Brief Where pre-construction evaluation has indicated no archaeological potential, and

Archaeological ‘Strip,Map andRecord’has not been implemented, a watching brief will be maintained during construction.

Negative Result No significant

archaeology identified ↓ Record

Unavoidable archaeological remains identifiedwithin the workingwidth, where preservation in situ is not achievable or desirable, will be archaeologically excavated and recorded in advance of construction.
