And the last song you wrote? I wrote a song with my friends Ryan Keen and Dan Dare - I’ve just been touring Germany and Austria supporting Ryan.

uBIMM THERE, DONE THAT

The annual Brighton Music Pop Quiz was held at The Brunswick in Hove on Wednesday, December 3. It was the latest in almost three years of regular quiz nights, hosted by BIMM (The British and Irish Modern Music Institute) with the aim of bringing together the Brighton music community.

Each hotly contested quiz night is hosted by the winning team of the previous quiz. Former winners include team members from First Column Management, Raygun Management, Fairsound Management, Republic of Music, Wonderland Management, Altmark Creative and BIMM. This time, the winning team were made up of BIMM staff, tutors and friends, including the school’s head of songwriting - and former My Life Story frontman - Jake Shillingford, alongside tutors Andy Maclure and Kieron Pepper, plus Sister Ray Records’ Phil Barton.

Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim was representing on the Skint team (pictured).

Where do you write and what do you write on/with? First thing in the morning I sit down at the piano with a pot of coffee and trawl my night brain for dream echoes.

Who is your favourite songwriter of all time? Carole King for her incredible hits, Leonard Cohen for his lyrics, Joni Mitchell for her strange melodies, Bill Withers for saying something that kills you.

And your favourite songwriter of the moment? Lykke Li, Wild Beasts, Ed Harcourt, Anna Calvi, Connan Mockasin, and gorgeous Eska.

What is the song you’re proudest of and why? Dial D For Denial came to me when I was in a very bad place and somehow said everything I needed to say at that moment.
