Music Week's UK and EU Radio Airplay chart based on RadioMonitor data ©. UK AIRPLAY ANALYSIS n BY ALAN JONES
No.1 on the radio airplay chart for the third time in four weeks, Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud is displaying mixed signals, with plays growing 4.21% from 5,698 to a new high of 5,938 while its audience declines fairly sharply, falling 14.56% from 84.04m to 71.80m. It was helped by an increase from 16 to 19 plays - a new high - at Radio 1 but severely hindered by a halving of support at Radio 2. The station’s most-aired track with 18 plays the previous week, it was played just nine times last week, and apparently most of those plays were on the shows with smaller audiences as it lost a huge 16.52m listeners on the station. Thinking Out Loud returned to the top of the sales chart on
Sunday, dethroning Take That’s These Days - but the Mancunian trio could get their revenge on the radio airplay chart, as These Days jumps 3-2 and almost halves its deficit. These Days suffered from a reduction in support on Radio 2 - from 14 to 10 plays - but is otherwise growing steadily, with plays increasing 6.14% week-on- week to 5,289. It had a top tally of 52 plays from The Hits Radio followed by the 11 stations in the Capital Network, amongst which its biggest supporters were Capital Scotland (50 plays) and the Yorkshire, South Wales and North Wales franchises, each of which aired it 49 times. The only new arrival into the Top 10 of the radio airplay chart

this week is Union J’s fourth hit, You Got It All. Leaping 16-9, with a 21.92% increase in plays from 2,902 to 3,538 and a 29.24% increase in audience from 33.86 to 43.76m, it had top tallies of between 85 and 79 plays from each of the Capital Network stations, but was played just once on Radio 1. It is Union J’s first Top 10
single on the radio airplay chart: debut hit Carry You peaked at No.17 and follow-up Beautiful Life got to No.25 - both in 2013 - while their previous 2014 single, Tonight (We Live Forever) reached No.35. All underachieved compared to their Top 10 sales chart positions. Christmas is coming and
four seasonal selections are already in the Top 50, with Band Aid 30’s Do They Know It’s Christmas moving 5-4, The
Pogues & Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale Of New York surging 82-24, Wham!’s Last Christmas advancing 67-36 and Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime dashing 79-39. If previous years are anything to go by, more will surely follow next week. Outside hasn’t reached the
Top 10 of the radio airplay chart yet - it climbs 17-14 this week - for Calvin Harris and guest vocalist Ellie Goulding but the promotional videoclip for the track is TV’s top choice for the second week in a row, with support increasing from 640 to 660 plays last week. That’s 26 more than Clean Bandit’s Real Love (feat. Jess Glynne) - which remains at No.2 - and includes top contributions of 72 plays from Starz TV, 65 from MTV Dance and 61 from Smash Hits TV.
