Kant vs. MK
Sam Smith’s double win dashed by Kant vs. MK remix
UPFRONT COMMERCIAL POP URBAN
ANALYSIS n BY ALAN JONES
S
am Smith came within a whisker of his first chart double this week, with his
latest smash Like I Can jumping 7-1 on the Commercial Pop chart - where it just shut out Take That’s These Days - but failed, again by a small margin, to take the Upfront chart title, which instead goes to Kant Vs. MK. Danish producer Kant’s
electro/house groove Ey Yo first made the Upfront club chart seven

FUSE ODG FT. KILLBEATZ Thinking About U / 3 Beat
months ago, debuting at No.64 in its original incarnation. It has never gone away completely since then but was launched into the higher reaches of the chart after a new mix by MK - Mark Kinchen - was serviced. This is the mix that is getting the majority of the support, hence the Kant Vs. MK tag on the chart - but there are also excellent mixes by Kant himself, and by Grades, which gave the track its initial impetus and have been reserviced to give it that extra push. Kant’s background is in hip-hop, and the vocal
samples on Ey Yo come from Busta Rhymes’ classic Dangerous. Denied his first ever Upfront
club chart No.1, Sam Smith has his third on the Commercial Pop chart, with Like I Can rising to the summit after being serviced in new mixes by Ill Blue, Jonas Rathsman and Artful. Australian rapper Iggy
Azalea scores her sixth Urban chart No.1 with Beg For It (feat. MØ). She first led the list in July 2012, with Steve Aoki and Angger Dimas collaboration Beat Down.
