requires special care. People in Komen, the centre of the Komen Karst, are aware of this too. Pleasant clustered villages tell stories of the harmony between humans and the karst landscape. Adorable little stone houses, delicious specialities provided by the karst soil, the aroma of the Mediterranean felt in the air – all of these are reasons to visit and experience the Karst in an authentic way. A special gem of Karst architecture is the medieval village of Štanjel, one of the oldest settlements in the Karst, known for its old centre and the unique Ferrari Garden designed by the famous architect Maks Fabiani.

Miren, Karst Discover the landscape of Miren, connecting the green Vipava Valley with the mysterious world of the Karst. Take a ride on a regular bike or an e-bike to see hidden corners and meet the friendly people who are committed to tradition and who live in harmony with nature. Try the culinary delights of the Vipava Valley and Karst cuisine. Asparagus enthusiasts should be sure to catch the special festival in the village of Orehovlje. Enjoy the view from the popular Trstelj hill or the Cerje tower, a monument to peace hiding precious history and artistic treasures behind its stone walls.

Laško No matter where you turn, green stories will accompany you while in Laško. Enjoy the healthy waters of the Rimske Terme Spa and the Thermana Laško Spa which holds the Slovenia Green Accommodation label. Follow the brewing story of Laško at every step – from one of Slovenia’s most famous breweries and a festival devoted to beer to enjoying wellness treatments and taking on challenges in a unique brewing-themed escape room. Taste the sweetness of honey and honey products made by beekeepers from Laško and its surrounding area.

Kamnik The historical town of Kamnik combines urban vibes and green nature. Visit the vibrant old town centre, which comes to life during various events. Visit the Days of National Costumes and Clothing Heritage, which is considered to be the largest ethnological festival in Slovenia. Walk just a few steps from the town centre and you’ll find yourself in green nature. Hike up to the nearby Velika Planina Plateau, where the herdsmen tradition is still alive and you can taste the local Trnič cheese. Enjoy the tranquillity of the Kamniška Bistrica Valley or take a stroll among the blooming flowerbeds of the Volčji Potok Arboretum. If you’d like to relax and take care of your wellbeing, visit the Terme Snovik Spa, which is also committed to green

and sustainable development.

The Slovenia Green Tourism Scheme The core of our sustainability in tourism is the national certification programme and the Slovenian green tourism scheme, which includes the Slovenia Green umbrella brand that: (one) brings together all efforts in the sustainable development of tourism in Slovenia; (two) provides destinations and service providers with specific tools to assess and improve their sustainable operations; and (three) promotes sustainable operations through the Slovenia Green brand. To obtain the Slovenia Green Destination

label (Bronze/Silver/Gold), the destinations must meet the Green Destinations Standard criteria, while providers first obtain or present one of the internationally recognised labels that are also verified by Slovenia Green in order to obtain the Slovenia Green Accommodation/ Park/Travel agency label. Currently, 92 Slovenia Green label holders

are included in the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, of which 48 are destinations, 38 accommodation providers, four natural parks and two travel agencies.

Awards The Slovenian Tourist Board has received several international awards for the scheme, including the title of the World’s First Green Country (which is 96% compliant with the Green Destinations standard). The scheme also received the prestigious

National Geographic World Legacy Destination Leadership award, conferred by the renowned National Geographic Society to the Slovenian Tourist Board in 2017. The country was also given special attention at the last meeting of the Pacific Asia Tourism Association (PATA). The World’s Top 100 Sustainable Destinations

list spotlights those destinations (countries and regions) that are most committed to sustainable and responsible tourism. With 31 destinations on the list this year, Slovenia is extremely successful in this respect. Nominations were evaluated by the Sustainable Top 100 Team, members of the Top 100 International Committee and other experts coordinated by the Green Destinations organisation. In addition to these awards, the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism recently received another recognition from the European Travel Commission (ETC). In June 2019 published a report on European sustainability schemes and their role in promoting sustainability and competitiveness in European tourism. It recognised Slovenia as the only destination in the study to systematically approach the implementation of sustainability schemes.
