Agency outgrows shop within a year of opening

Juliet Dennis

A travel agency is relocating its second shop to premises four times larger less than a year after it opened. Destination, which launched

in Silsden, West Yorkshire, 16 years ago, opened a small second branch in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, in December 2024. Agency co-owner Shevaun Joy

said the two-desk shop, off the town’s market square, had been such a success since it opened – with bookings taken every day – that a decision was taken to upsize. Joy, who operates the business

alongside Lisa Manditsch, said: “The town is buzzing. Everyone shops locally and there is no other travel agency so it has got busier and busier from the day we opened. “Word of mouth is everything in

towns like this so we are really pleased with how the business has done.” As a result, Joy has lined up a

significantly larger, prime location overlooking the market square in the town, and has fought off interest from other retailers to secure the premises. “We signed the lease last week.

We were first on the list to get it, but a lot of people wanted it,” she said. “It’s four times the size of our

current shop and has an upstairs that we can use for client events and for people who want some privacy to talk to us about bookings.” The agency already has six staff in

Silsden and two in the Barnoldswick branch, including an apprentice who started last week, plus a homeworker who works remotely. The new four-desk shop will open

on November 10 once renovation work has been completed and will be run by three agents, with one member of staff moving across from Silsden to Barnoldswick each day. “We all do a day a week in

Barnoldswick already and staff love it as it mixes it up for them and they meet new clients,” added Joy. The agency, which works closely

with Jet2holidays but specialises in cruise and worldwide tailor-made holidays, is planning an open day for customers and is hosting an event in the Civic Hall in the town to mark its first birthday in January 2026, with 12 operators due to have stands to promote their holidays.

Royal Caribbean reveals Q3 income ‘better than expected’

Eastern Airways files to appoint administrators

Eastern Airways was on the brink of administration as Travel Weekly went to press on Tuesday, with the regional UK carrier suspending all flights. Clive Wratten, chief executive

of the Business Travel Association, warned the suspension of flights could have a “major effect” on travel as he revealed members of the association supported more than 1,600 Eastern Airways passengers this year. Wratten said: “This suspension

of operations underscores the urgent need for regional investment for travel infrastructure. With already limited domestic air connectivity, the loss of Eastern Airways further isolates key parts of the UK and limits choice for travellers.” Customers of the airline, which

operates regional services between Aberdeen, Humberside, Gatwick, Newquay, Teesside and Wick, were urged not to travel to the airports. The company filed a notice

of intention to appoint an administrator – a formal step that gives the company up to 10 days of legal protection from creditors while it explores rescue options, restructures, or prepares for insolvency proceedings – on Monday morning. Eastern reported a net loss of

£19.7 million for the year ending March 2024.
