Managing the impact of FX fluctuation on the travel industry

Travel is firmly back to pre-pandemic levels, with travel companies seeing high demand for their services from consumers and businesses alike. Our latest research reveals 42% of UK businesses are looking to increase the amount of business travel they undertake, as a way of boosting their bottom line. 1

However, the travel industry is also amongst the most exposed to ongoing currency fluctuations as it deals with a range of suppliers and vendors – from hotels to airlines and transfer companies – which may operate in and around different currencies.

This all has an impact on travel companies’ ability to remain competitive

and profitable. But there are some measures travel businesses can implement to protect themselves against exchange rate volatility and set themselves up for success, especially as strong demand for travel continues:

Forward Contracts: Securing a Forward Contract allows travel companies to buy or sell a fixed amount of currency at an agreed rate for a set period, for instance up to 12 months. Businesses can also select a target rate for a specific currency using Market Orders, helping to further manage potential market fluctuations.

Stay informed on market movements: One way to do this is by reading about key external factors affecting the markets. American Express

provides a monthly FX calendar which keeps businesses updated with upcoming trade deals and events that might impact exchange rates and worth factoring in when making international payments.

Lean on expert support: An experienced and trusted partner can help answer any questions on exchange rate volatility, share situations across different currencies and support current and future business needs.

The travel industry has already faced some challenging years. But tackling international payments will help businesses avoid unwanted financial surprises and protect the bottom line as both businesses and consumers consider the financial implications of their trips.
