Staffing: Low wages are a problem
Story: Travel retail ‘faces worst staff shortage on record’ Ex-travel employee: You won’t get people back offering them the salaries that were on offer pre-Covid. People want the security of a higher basic. Anyone who left travel is seeing their skills rewarded elsewhere. Love of travel isn’t enough to attract and keep staff anymore. Mark Godden: This industry is a great one, and there are perks, but we have to face the reality of the competitive environment we are in. Companies that can be flexible and creative with their employment benefits packages will be the ones that will thrive and secure the best of the available talent in the coming months. Helen Camm:We don’t just book the holiday now. It’s all the testing and entry requirements that take so long. Customers are still also wanting us to match the internet. If online discounts come down, wages can be improved within the travel industry.

The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Testing: Day-two rule must go
Story: EasyJet chief executive expects ‘very good summer 2022’ No matter how many optimistic noises are made by the tourism industry for 2022, Johan [Lundgren, easyJet chief executive] is bang on the money calling for the removal of all testing for fully-vaccinated passengers. Be it PCR or lateral flow, it is a lot of unnecessary hassle that many older clients just cannot be bothered with. It is only when these day-two tests are removed that the industry can go back to competing for customers on a level playing field. Ian Cameron
Tracing: PLF link good
Story: Relief as requirement for costly traveller PCR tests is removed It is most welcome and reassuring that there is full connection of the lateral flow test with the Passenger Locator Form. If the traveller tests positive for Covid-19, it must be related back to their PLF, so that the person can be traced. That is the whole point – to keep an eye on the virus. The traveller’s test result is connected to the test provider and, crucially, to the traveller’s pre- booked test reference number on their PLF. Speakthetruth
