British visitors are ‘so important’ to the Balearic Islands

British tourism is “essential” to the Balearics, according to tourism minister Iago Negueruela. Speaking at this year’s virtual

Jordan expects new testing protocols to be approved soon

Jordan is piloting Covid-19 testing protocols to open up the country to tourism, according to the managing director of its tourist board. Dr Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat

explained there would be no quarantine, with travellers taking a PCR test within 72 hours of departing their airport or origin, and then another PCR test on arrival in Jordan, with results sent to the tourist’s accommodation. “As it would be charter tour

operator flights only, we would know exactly where tourists are going so we would be able to trace them,” he said. “We have assigned quarantine rooms in hotels in case anyone has tested positive.” Dr Arabiyat said the project

was based on results from other destinations that had opened to international travellers, including Dubai and Turkey. He expects the government to grant approval in the next two weeks.

Tenerife’s president urges UK to make tests more affordable

The president of Tenerife has called on the UK government to make tests for travellers more affordable in a bid to “save the Christmas season”. Pedro Martín, president of the Tenerife Cabildo

(council), claimed antigen tests on the Canary island can cost as little as £10. The island’s requirement for visitors to present

proof of a negative Covid test – either PCR or antigen – before checking into accommodation came into force on November 14. Martín said: “The price here is £9-£10 whereas in the UK the price might be 10 times more. “We don’t really get why there is such a big price

difference and it really concerns us because if people have to pay that amount of money, it’s not a good incentive. They have to calculate how much they have to spend on their holiday.” He said the tests offered 93%-95% accuracy and

rate, warning that travellers should be tested in the UK before departure to avoid disruption on arrival. Visitors who have symptoms or receive a

positive result are isolated either at their hotel or at government-owned tourist accommodation until they can show a second negative test. Martín said the island had been gearing up to

receive 150,000 to 180,000 visitors from its two biggest source markets, the UK and Germany, following the announcement of the UK travel corridor. But the subsequent England lockdown and a recommendation against travel from Germany had stalled the recovery of the island’s tourism sector, which is 35% of GDP. He said: “We are currently working on trying to save

the Christmas season.”
