Here’s a tip: Do away with cruise gratuities

Story: Special Report: The great cruise gratuities debate I am against automatic tipping. Tipping should be made when a good service is rendered. Cruise gratuities are a rip-off and should be done away with. During the last two cruises we did not pay gratuities but gave a very good tip to our chamber maid and waiters. They were happy and said it was more than they usually receive.

People’s vote on Brexit is edging ever closer

Story: Abta welcomes six-month Brexit delay Brexit is now the Halloween horror show. It is very appropriate as we seem to have a zombie government. Will the politicians use the time wisely? The people’s vote is looming ever larger, and quite frankly, the quicker it comes the better, to end the impasse.

PATRICK DOYLE

Clia UK & Ireland @CliaUK We’re excited that for the first time, more than two million people in the UK & Ireland went cruising!

Advantage Travel Partnership @AdvantageHQ It’s official, AmaDouro has been christened! A massive well done to [godmother] @jlo_said

Story: Thomas Cook ‘may have exceeded borrowing limits’ How much incompetence is enough? Surely with the endless profit warnings and other mess-ups Thomas Cook’s investors will demand change at the top that will dictate a new strategy and direction. The CAA should be asking themselves why they renewed its Atol licence.

PHILIP Travel Weekly welcomes a response from Thomas Cook

LETTER OF THE

WEEK

TALK BACK WHAT YOU’RE SAYING THIS WEEK

Story: Top-10 Atol-holder capacity goes up It’s impossible to read what this all means. At first glance, 15% more capacity in a market that is struggling to find impetus is a recipe for massive late discounting and operator distress. However, the regulatory changes referred

to by Alan Bowen are likely to have had a significant impact and the market may be more in balance than it first appears. The most likely outcome is some increase

in late discounting, but in the Alice-in- Wonderland-world of Theresa May’s continuing Brexit debate with her own party, really, almost anything could happen... PAUL SAWBRIDGE

Is more capacity a recipe for discounts?
