Globes glory for trade’s favourite tour operators


Amie Keeley Globe Travel Awards 2018


Jet2, Super Break, Gold Medal and Attraction World were the standout winners at this year’s Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards, each taking home multiple gongs on the night.


Thousands of agents voted


for their favourite suppliers at the event, which was held at the Grosvenor House hotel, London. This year’s celebrity host was comedian and TV presenter Harry Hill who presented the awards


with Travel Weekly editor-in-chief Lucy Huxley in front of more than 1,200 guests. Jet2 scored a hat-trick taking


home the awards for Best Short- Haul Airline, Best Short-Haul Operator and Best Trade-Friendly Brand across its Jet2.com and Jet2holidays divisions. Super Break, Gold Medal and


Attraction World each picked up two awards, while Sandals and Holiday Extras won Globes for the 10th year in a row. It was also a big night for The Travel Corporation, whose brands Insight Vacations, Trafalgar and Uniworld each won

Dunlop received a standing ovation when he collected the night’s top individual honour, the Outstanding Contribution Award. More than £8,000 was raised for Teenage Cancer Trust which was


this year’s nominated charity. Travel Weekly managing director Stuart Parish said: “Hosting 1,250


industry colleagues at the biggest night in UK travel is testament to how far we have come as a business in the last nine years. “But none of this would be possible without the support of all our suppliers and, of course, our agent readers. Thanks also to Steve Dunlop for his amazing photography and for being part of a moment I will remember for

4 Calls to probe ‘villain’ bank sector

Abta and Aito have demanded an investigation into the banking sector after agents face being left thousands of pounds out of pocket following the ban on credit card charges.


The ban, described by one leading consortium as “a killer for leisure agents”, came in on Saturday under new EU rules. Fears have been raised that


agents will be hit financially when


customers – many now paying deposits – have to pay the full balance and opt to use a card. Abta estimated members


would see costs rise by as much as £20,000, while Aito slammed media claims that the travel sector previously profiteered by charging fees, saying: “The villain is actually the banking sector”. Both demanded a review of the


card payment market, which has not reduced the cost to retailers as a result of the ruling, as had been hoped. Aito said the new rules were a “dog’s dinner” and demanded

are taking deposits by credit cards and asking customers to pay the balance by another method.” Alan Wardle, Abta director of


public affairs, said: “While there is no way of reversing the ban…we are asking government to launch an urgent review into the card payments market.” A poll on Travelweekly.co.uk


found 23% of respondents planned to charge a booking fee, 19% to absorb costs and 16% to stop taking credit cards.
