The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Manchester: Airport shambles

Story: Manchester Airports Group reaches 62% of pre-pandemic traffic I’ve just travelled through Manchester airport T1 for the first time since the pandemic and the set-up at security was nothing short of a national embarrassment. It took an hour to get through and staff had to systematically pull people out of the queues to ensure they didn’t miss their flights. The airport clearly can’t match staffing levels to demand. And it is missing a trick as passengers don’t have time to spend in shops and lounges after they’ve finally got through security. The impression given to overseas visitors must have been woeful. The airport is a shambles. Sort your act out – this will not help any recovery.

Vaccine: UK should have donated doses

Story: Global tourism recovery remains ‘conditional on vaccination’ I was horrified to read the UK destroyed 100,000 doses of the Astrazeneca vaccine in August 2021 as they were due to expire. These could and should have been donated in good time to poorer countries, many of which are destinations to which millions of UK holidaymakers travel. Jenny Jackson, personal travel consultant, Blue Bay Travel

Deben Travel @DebenTravel Had a few customers ask about possible fuel surcharges on holidays. It would be good to know what operators think about this as it has happened in the past.

Gold Medal Agents @goldmedalagents Jumeirah dropped by Gold Medal HQ yesterday to deliver training (and some tasty cupcakes) to our teams in sales, product and marketing. It’s great to see our supplier partners in person again and to find out all the latest updates, which we’ll be sharing with you.

Masks: Opinions split

Story: Tui Airways drops mask mandate Sophie Fatehnia: Well done Tui. Finally, common sense is returning to aviation. Christine Jackson: I’m keeping my mask on.

Derek Jones @Degsy_DJ Der Touristik It’s simply not true that you have less protection from price rises if you book a package with a tour operator. If anything, the opposite is true – tour operators often absorb retrospective fuel surcharges from airlines and don’t pass them on.

PLF: No point keeping form

Story: Health secretary ‘backs PLF removal’, say reports Annette Dale: All the coronavirus emergency powers end on March 23 so I can’t see how they can enforce any of the nonsense measures after that.
