EasyJet acquires Atol to cover car hire with flights

EasyJet has acquired its own Atol to conform with new Package Travel Regulations, despite recently unveiling plans to transform easyJet Holidays.
The carrier caused a stir last
week when it became licensed for up to 185,000 Atol-protected bookings from July to September. But a spokesman said: “The Atol
is in place to cover flights plus car hire booked together, forming a package. It’s not for easyJet
Holidays, which has a separate Atol licence.” EasyJet Holidays has traded
since 2011 and is licensed to carry just over 166,000 package holidaymakers in the 12 months to March, with bookings protected through the Atol of accommodation supplier Hotelopia. That made the new licence for 185,000 for July to September appear significant, especially after easyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren – former deputy chief at Tui – revealed plans in May “to transform our holidays business

[and] capture a significant share of the market”. Lundgren suggested easyJet
enjoys “a cost advantage of at least 20% over leading operators” and told investors: “EasyJet hasn’t taken advantage of the opportunities. Only 500,000 passengers book a hotel with us out of an addressable market of 20 million.” He announced the recruitment
of Tui managing director for group product and purchasing Garry Wilson to run the holidays business. However, Wilson has yet to
start in his new role and ‘flight accommodation’ bookings made direct with easyJet or through authorised agents (those with agency agreements) fall within an Atol exemption granted by the CAA.

5 Travel pay gap one of highest in UK

The UK travel industry has one of the highest gender pay gaps of any sector, new analysis shows.
The average pay gap in the
sector is 22% compared with a national average of 14%. Women are disproportionately
represented in lower-skilled and lower-paid areas of the industry, according to a study of the gender pay gap reports submitted this year by 70 aviation, travel,
cruise and logistics businesses. The research also suggested the
“operational nature” of the sector, which often involves travel, was a barrier to female progression due to caring responsibilities. The analysis by business services firm PwC looked at travel, hospitality and leisure firms. The pay gap in UK hospitality
is significantly lower at 7%, while that in leisure is 10%. But in travel, Thomas Cook, Tui Airways, easyJet and Jet2holidays all have gender pay gaps of 20% or greater. Jon Terry, PwC’s diversity and

inclusion consulting leader, said: “The longer, unsociable hours and the multi-centre location working is a problem for carers, the majority of whom are women. This becomes more of an issue the more senior you get. There are also far fewer women entering into highly specialist roles, such as pilots,
which is more a societal issue.” He urged travel firms to sign up
to a diversity in hospitality, travel and leisure charter that asks firms to commit to a 10-point action plan to improve gender equality and pay. An AWTE spokeswoman said:
“These numbers are startling but they will hopefully raise awareness of the pay gap and skills shortages of women across this industry and ensure it remains a topic of discussion at board meetings. “The AWTE has started training sessions to support development of women to fill the skills gap.”
