The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Quarantine: We need single test

Story: Quarantine dismay hastens calls for testing Many countries worldwide have introduced a single-test rule within 72 hours of travel or on arrival because the science supports it. We need to introduce a single test for everyone entering the UK from any destination, regardless of the infection rates in the country they have just left. That would avoid price disparities for outbound destinations, and allow inbound tourism to restart. We also need the FCO to back out of travel bans on the basis of Covid. If we have a ‘firewall’ around the UK, whether testing or the current quarantine, there would be no need to ban travel to anywhere. Countries that are struggling, or can’t cope with inbound tourists, have their borders shut anyway, so the FCO’s intervention is unhelpful and unnecessary. Danny Callaghan, chief executive, LATA

Paul Charles @PPaulCharles I’m pleased to say that following talks between @ThePCAgency and @EU_Commission, a new “traffic light system” has been agreed to help consumers in Europe. We’re delighted to have been able to help give clarity on future travel. Let’s hope @transportgovuk uses it too.

Virgin: Jobs threat is dreadful Story: Virgin Atlantic consults on 1,150 job losses This is dreadful news. I’m appalled at the lack of government support for the UK travel industry. Testing for travel has to be a way forward. #test4travel Diane Healey

New store: Good luck, Ben Story: Travel agent opens high street shop in Harrogate Best of luck, [Ben Poole]. Ride the storm till things start back. And it will be busier than ever – we will have such a travel boom it will be unreal. Carmel Corrigan

to revive as an OTA Story: Thomas Cook revival as OTA ‘imminent’ An asset-light Thomas Cook is not a bad approach, though being an OTA is pretty tough right now. I’m not sure they’ll be able to compete against the vertically integrated model right now. However, if they put the customer at the heart of their business, then they will have a clear point of differentiation. Return4Travel

Derek Jones @Degsy_DJ Der Touristik UK This is a Pyrrhic victory. It shows why campaigning for regionalisation of quarantine was pointless. We need a testing regime for all UK arrivals. Nothing else (bar a vaccine) will make a difference.

brucepoontip G Adventures We’re back, baby! Our first trips in six months departed this weekend... Croatia, Greece, Mont Blanc. It’s been a tough time for the industry but you can’t believe how happy we are to get back on the road with you!

Cook: Tough time
