CAA CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF ATOL
The Civil Aviation Authority celebrated 50 years of the Atol scheme with a reception for 130 guests at the State Rooms of the Speaker’s House in the House of Commons.
The Atol scheme was set up in 1973 to protect package holidaymakers in the event of their
tour operator going out of business. Speakers included Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, speaker of the House of Commons; aviation minister
Anthony Browne MP; CAA chair Sir Stephen Hillier; and Ian Taylor, executive editor of T
Weekly. Over the past 50 years, the Atol scheme has grown significantly. It protected bookings worth about £31 billion last year, and this year is projected to financially protect
almost 32 million travellers. More than 1,600 businesses in the travel sector are currently licensed by the scheme. Since 2000, Atol
has repatriated about 242,000 holidaymakers and settled more than 1.7 million claims for consumers with future departure dates.
