Members of the travel industry are making good use of downtime from their jobs by supporting the NHS in a variety of ways during the crisis. Hollie-Rae Brader and Natalie Marsh report

Trade steps up to help health staff around the UK

I

simply couldn’t sit back and watch this all unfold without helping the community,” says Ben Poole, owner of The Travel

Journal. The Harrogate-based homeworker

has stepped up to support the NHS during the coronavirus crisis by taking on a role as a delivery driver for Boots. Since Monday, he has been delivering NHS prescriptions to those self-isolating or deemed vulnerable in North Yorkshire. Poole, who has worked as a travel

agent for 21 years, said he’d continue to service his travel clients, but he felt it was important for those who are fit and able to support their local community, adding that his new role was “incredibly rewarding”. “I thought it was important to

give something back to the local community,” he said. “I’ve got all my bookings amended

the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust by delivering prescriptions with NHS staff to patients’ home, after they have been discharged from hospital. The company has redeployed two

of its vehicles that would usually be used for its airport transfers, serving two hospitals, in Blackburn and Burnley. General manager Peter Mackie,

who oversees the transport service, said: “A lot of people are thinking it’s a great thing to help as much as we can. We’re very pleased to do it.”

OTHER INDUSTRY INITIATIVES

Q Ocky White Travel (pictured), in Haverfordwest, is offering employees of Hywel Dda, the local health board, £100 off holidays worth at least £600 if booked with the Advantage member or nearby Milford Haven Travel.

Q Jet2holidays is allowing NHS staff to amend holidays booked for April, May or June for free as many times as they like, while luxury operator Original Travel is running a raffle for NHS workers, offering more than 300 prizes worth £50,000 from 99 brands.

Q Airlines are encouraging staff who are not working, due to the widespread grounding of flights, to volunteer to help at the three new NHS Nightingale Hospitals being set up in London, Birmingham and Manchester. EasyJet has written to all of its 9,000 UK- based employees, 4,000 of whom are cabin crew trained in CPR, while Virgin Atlantic has asked the same of its 4,000 employees. Tina Milton, director of cabin services for easyJet, said: “The NHS is at the forefront of dealing with this health emergency, but the training and skills our cabin crew have, working closely with the medical professionals, could help make a real difference.”
