The Insider Rodrigues
Coral-fringed beaches and tropical vegetation beckon in Rodrigues, an unspoilt autonomous island of the Republic of Mauritius. Some 350 miles east of its sister isle, Rodrigues feels wonderfully isolated, with visitors spending their days frolicking in the sparkling water and hiking the island’s mountainous spine. The destination’s star appeal is on the rise thanks to a new acquisition by Constance Hotels & Resorts: the brand opened 32-room lodge Constance Tekoma Rodrigues in January.
Réunion
Exotic birds, chameleons and humpback whales all call Réunion home. This tiny French enclave between Madagascar and Mauritius boasts a rugged, rolling interior, making it a haven for lovers of the great outdoors. Explore the capital, Saint Denis, where the sounds of Muslim prayer chants and African drums drift on the breeze; scale the peaks of volcanoes; and enjoy the peace of a secluded beach.
Christmas Island
There’s a reason this tiny Australian territory is nicknamed the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean. A favourite of Sir David Attenborough, it’s famous for its red crabs, sea birds, whale sharks and well- preserved coral reefs. Almost two-thirds of the island is national park, with a `iÛiÀÃi miÝ ov yoÀ> >n` v>Õn>] >Ã Üill >Ã a fusion of Malay, Singaporean, Australian and Chinese cuisine and culture.
Mozambique
Home to the longest stretch of Indian Ocean coastline in Africa, Mozambique offers true barefoot luxury, with idyllic beaches, lush plains and year-round sunshine. While many are enticed here for the coral reefs and marine life, the country’s bountiful biodiversity extends on land, with elephants, lions and different bird species found in their natural habitats in Gorongosa National Park and Niassa Game Reserve.
Comoros
A volcanic archipelago located off the east coast of Africa between Madagascar and Mozambique, Comoros comprises three main islands: Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan. Carpeted in thick jungle and vegetation, this is an island nation celebrated for its natural beauty, with undulating volcanic landscapes meeting pristine waters, >n` vÀ>}À>nÌ yoÀ> }iÛin} Ìhi Ài}ion iÌÃ oÜn «iÀvÕmi°
