DARCY SULLIVAN

It is a grim irony that in the golden age of film restoration and presentation—when both famous and obscure films are given new respect in the commercial home viewing channel—the most intel- ligent publication celebrating the cinema fantastique cannot thrive. Your publication and your writing have meant so much to us readers. I thank you for pro- viding an exciting film education.

is both assured and eternal. I can state without hyperbole that I re- visit back issues weekly and the loss of this priceless resource will be a hole in my life that will never be filled. My best wishes to you both in your future endeavors.

I’ve been with VW for over 20 years and want to thank you for introducing me to LaserDisc back in the day after several years of lost interest in VHS. This really is a sad day for me... I’m actually quite upset because VW has been a part of my collecting life for so long, from when my daughter was only 2 years old to now, when my youngest granddaughter is the same age. I’m sure you will be receiving many, many emails in a similar vein but all I can say at the moment is thanks for every- thing. My bound issues remain a prized possession.

This is very sad news. I can- not say anything but VW was for me—and for (without any doubt)

lots of friends of mine and world- wide readers—the best, the most unusual, and most essential cinema magazine of our time.

I’m sorry to hear this news. Selfishly, because I cherish VW beyond all other journals, but also thinking of your work in awe of all that you have accomplished. You have opened my eyes to so many precious things. Even that distant and fabulous city Cincin- nati, I view as a magical place since the Lucases are said to live and work there.

Your magazine stood head and shoulders above all others. I could not wait to see that enve- lope in my mail box. I have been a follower for a long time and I wondered often how y’all man- aged to pull it off and still deliver a classic product. I have all my back issues together and I will treasure them forever. Please know that you brightened my life considerably.

In my experience, no other publication has offered such high quality thought and writ- ing on such a wide variety of movies never being constrained by labels such as arthouse and grindhouse—and for 27 years! Honestly, your announcement has not quite sunk in yet. My heart sank when I read your email because losing VW is the same as losing a dear friend. A dear friend that often introduced me to something new, always offered insightful and lots of times just plain ol’ fun commen- tary, kept me in touch with oth- ers—I mean who else would know how I delighted I was to catch up with Mimsy Farmer, but most of all made me feel a part of a community of people with shared a passion for mov- ies—all types of movies. Thank you, Donna and Tim, for sharing with me that kinship.

All good things come to an end but you published one of the best film magazines in the his- tory of the field. You can be proud of your work and I was delighted to read every issue— often discovering hidden filmic gems I had never seen and fre- quently discovering new things
