April 1966 was the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. President Éamon de Valera and Taoiseach Seán Lemass, both of whom had taken part in the Rising, headed the official commemoration. De Valera, and other members of Fianna Fáil, felt that the commemoration should focus on the nation’s pride in its past and optimism for the future. Lemass believed that it offered an opportunity to herald a new era of national social and economic development.
