This topic explores political, economic and social developments during the period 1949–1989. Ireland moved away from economic protectionism to membership of the European Economic Community, and opened up to the cultural influences of the wider world. Political developments were greatly influenced by Ireland’s relationship with Europe as well as the Republic’s relationship with Northern Ireland. A number of influential figures emerged who contributed to the shaping of the island’s political, economic and cultural future.
