2018 MARCH 15 IMarEST Careers Workshop at Oceanology International 2018 London, UK

INBRIEF

Battle of the Atlantic memorial planned An estimated 100,000 people lost their lives during the Battle of the Atlantic in World War Two, but the event doesn’t have a single dedicated national memorial anywhere in the United Kingdom. Now, a charity – the Battle of the

Atlantic Memorial – is launching a £2.5m fundraising campaign to build a memorial in Liverpool dedicated to those who died, as well as those who served and survived. A statue is being designed by Paul Day, who previously created the Battle of Britain Monument on the Thames Embankment in London.

Ocean University of China embarks on academic partnership with the IMarEST The Ocean University of China (OUC), in Qingdao, has entered into a new academic partnership with the IMarEST. The Ocean University of China offers education and studies in all major branches of natural and social sciences alongside engineering, but is especially renowned for its marine sciences and fishery sciences departments.

The university will be working

towards gaining accreditation with the IMarEST for its MEng in Power Engineering and its BEng in Marine Engineering degrees. All OUC students are also

enrolled as student members of the IMarEST and the two organisa- tions are working together to promote one another’s activities.

Babcock International supports STEM returners initiative The drive to encourage more engineers to return to work after career breaks has been given a major boost in the south west of England thanks to international engineering company, Babcock International. Partnering with the IMarEST

and the Women’s Engineering Society to launch the initiative, the engineering company is offering a trailblazing 13-week programme aimed at giving highly qualified and trained engineers a chance to show that taking extended time away from work is not a barrier to getting a job in 2018. The programme is open to men

and women in Bristol and the surrounding areas, who have taken

a career break, as well as those who wish to transfer to a different industry sector but lack the relevant work experience.

IMarEST represented at London Convention and Protocol sessions The IMarEST was present for the 39th session of the London Convention and the 12th session of the London Protocol. An overview of the meeting and the IMarEST’s engagement is now available on the website. The London Convention is one

of the first global conventions to protect the marine environment from human activities. In force since 1975, its objective is to promote the effective control of all sources of marine pollution and to take all practicable steps to prevent pollution of the sea by dumping of wastes and other matter. In 1996, the London Protocol

was agreed to further modernize the convention and, eventually, replace it. Under the protocol, all dumping is prohibited, except for possibly acceptable wastes on the so-called “reverse list”. The London Protocol came into force on 24 March 2006.
