EVENT PREVIEW Q Oceanology International S
In March, the IMarEST will be working with the Oceanology International 2018 exhibition at ExCel London to offer enlightening careers advice to the next generation of marine professionals
tudents seeking a career within the marine technology industry, or looking for inspiration on what direction to take vocationally, may have already fl agged up a visit to Oceanology International, which takes place from 13 to 15 March 2018 at ExCeL London. The world’s leading ocean technology and marine science exhibition and conference, which is now in its 49th year, will once
again provide an opportunity for university students to discover and explore the wide-ranging career opportunities in the marine industry. The Oceanology International event is the ideal forum for industry,
academia and government to share knowledge and connect with the marine science and technology communities, bringing together the latest technologies and developments, and thought leaders worldwide, to help anyone choosing a vocation in this fi eld to fi nd the right path.
Careers Day Once registered, students have unlimited free access to Oceanology International’s exhibition, conference and, most signifi cantly, Careers Day, which offers a dedicated programme targeted at students. Taking place on 15 March, Careers Day will provide an insight to the
scope and scale of the career paths available within the marine science and technology sectors, a look at some of the exciting and emerging projects taking place in the industry today, and guidance on how and where to look for jobs in the marine sector. A crucial element of Careers Day is that students will have access to more than 400 exhibiting companies offering wide-ranging products and services in the marine technology and ocean science sectors. Students are actively encouraged to visit and engage in direct conversations with exhibitors to learn more about the opportunities available within their specifi c organisations. A downloadable Oi18 Careers Day exhibition trail will be available
one week before the start of the event, which will list companies eager to meet students. Icebreaker questions will also be included to help kick-start conversations. The Society of Underwater Technology’s Young Professionals Panel will enable student delegates to network with and hear from young professionals across the marine sector, who will share their own experiences and provide insights into how their career paths developed and the projects that they are contributing to today.
Careers Workshop The IMarEST, a long-time supporter of Oceanology International, will be back this year to host a Careers Workshop on 15 March for students and those seeking their fi rst career in the marine sector. The programme will include information on where to fi nd careers advice and vacancies, provide access to important market statistics, and give opportunities for networking with those already in the industry. “We are very proud to be a supporting organisation of this infl uential
event and to be putting on a workshop for students to support them as they venture into their careers in the marine industry,” says IMarEST’s chief executive, David Loosley Meanwhile, David Ince, Oceanology International event manager at
Reed Exhibitions, says: “Oceanology International 2018 is an unmissable opportunity to gain career inspiration, see what is new in the industry, and meet key players in ocean science and marine technology. “The industry sees Oceanology International as a wonderful opportunity to meet the next generation of engaged marine professionals and to learn more about what they expect to achieve. “Unlike other sectors, recruitment in the marine sector is often done
much more personally, and networking with potential employers is hugely important. Oceanology International provides an opportunity for those actively seeking employment to meet with potential employers and to network with some young professionals who were in their position just a few years ago to pick up some handy hints and tips.” This year’s Oceanology International event also features the new
Ocean ICT Expo – a brand-new showcase focusing on the IT, communications and data solutions that form the technical foundation for modern ocean space research and industry. Encompassing technologies across the satellite, communications,
data and connectivity sectors – including earth observation, cloud storage, visualisation and analytics – Ocean ICT Expo is set to bring together hundreds of highly targeted data and IT professionals who are looking to procure specialist solutions, alongside the traditional Oceanology International audience.
