Just for a change, it was not the smaller companies that led the way in share price rises during November. In one of the better months of the past year for investors, it was the larger companies which topped the Thames Valley table.
Costain, the Maidenhead-based technology construction and engineering company really hit the high spots with a 73% rise. In a month when the group appointed a new chief financial officer (Helen Willis, who previously held similar positions at Premier Farnell and De La Rue), it gave its views on the chancellor’s Spending Review.
“Costain has been improving people’s lives for more than 155 years and we look forward to continuing our support to the Government in strengthening the UK’s place in the world,” it said.
The biggest rise among the large companies (63%) came from Micro Focus International, the Newbury-based infrastructure software group. A trading statement showed revenues of some $3 billion, in line with management expectations. The group said there was a continuation of strong cash generation and working capital management, especially in the first half of 2020. CEO Stephen Murdoch said despite being in “extraordinary times”, the staff had adapted to the challenges.
