AUTOMOTIVE PCEO
The European passenger car engine oil market
H. Ernest Henderson, PhD, President, K&E Petroleum Consulting
The lubricants industry is both fascinating and complex. It incorporates many assorted products with different qualities and performance attributes.
Lubricants are formulated with a base oil as its foundation. From there, chemical additives are incorporated into the mixture to elevate the performance of the base oil to that desired in the finished product. The type and concentration of chemical additives will vary by product and the conditions from which it is required to operate. Engine oils are typically subjected to the most extreme operating conditions and therefore require the highest concentration of chemical additives, and in most instances the highest quality base oils.
The automotive industry represents the general category where engine oils exist. The other main categories include industrial oils, and process oils.
