Taking a look back and a look forward
After what can only be considered as a memorable year 2020, GEIR members are starting 2021 with confidence, taking stock of what has been accomplished over the year that passed.
It is true that 2020 came with its fair share of challenges, on both the personal and/or professional sides. However, it also brought to light one’s strengths – which is, for the re-refinery industry, its resilience.
Despite the difficult and unpredictable business and social environment created by the pandemic, which caused some limited shut down, re-refineries generally continued to treat and to recycle the significant amounts of used lubricants which were produced throughout Europe and their production of re-refined base oils represented a reliable, local source of base oils for lubricant producers. This makes us not only proud of what has been achieved, but also very confident for the months to come.
Regarding our activities at European level, one can only acknowledge that GEIR is a valued stakeholder, whose contribution in EU debates is sought after. These past months, the re-refinery industry’s views were listened to and reflected in several important ongoing reports. We can notably mention the forthcoming Circular Economy report, currently drafted by the European Parliament, but also our many contributions to the different studies on waste oils treatment and market, carried out by the Commission’s Joint Research Center. More recently, GEIR was also contacted with regard to the review of waste-related Annexes in the EU Regulation on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs Regulation).
Overall, our sector’s tenacity highlights our contribution to the EU’s economic recovery, which is fully aligned with its circular economy agenda.
