Border Controls A new border operating model has been published regarding customs declarations on imported goods into the United Kingdom. Companies or their agents will need an EORI - Economic Operators Registration and Identification number to make customs declarations.

From

1st January 2021

Non-controlled goods will require simple customs declarations.

Controlled goods will need to make full customs declarations.

Export declarations and UK exit Safety and Security declarations will be required for all goods.

From

1st July 2021

Traders moving any goods will have to make full customs declarations at the point of importation and pay relevant tariffs.

Temporary storage facilities for goods are allowable for up to 90 days before a declaration is made for all goods, where space permits.

Where space does not permit temporary storage, then pre-lodgement declarations will be needed ahead of boarding.

It is recommended that companies seek the advice of an import-export agent for help making customs declarations.

Tariffs and trade From 1st January 2021 the UK will implement its own UK Global Tariff (UKGT) schedule which will replace the EU’s Common External Tariff for imported goods, and which applies until 31st December 2020.

The UKGT does not cover the tariffs payable on goods which are imported by another country.

The UKGT will apply to all goods imported into the UK unless: • an exception applies, such as a relief or tariff suspension

• the goods come from countries that are part of the Generalised Scheme of Preferences

• the country you’re importing from has a trade agreement with the UK
